Clinical Effects of Yoga and Fertility Challenges
Evidence citing yoga as an aid in mental and physical health continues to grow! Here are just a few examples of how yoga supports individuals (female and male) during conception efforts:
-
A review published in May 2024 investigates ways yoga may positively impact infertility, including enhanced blood flow, reduced inflammation, relaxation response, and modulation of the HPA axis. It also reviews literature supporting the positive effects of yoga on infertility factors such as oxidative stress (OS), oxidative DNA damage (ODD), epigenetic changes, hormonal balance, ovarian function, menstrual irregularities, and stress reduction.
-
A pilot study published in 2023 investigated structured yoga intervention for people experiencing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The conclusion was that the group practicing yoga reported higher quality of life and integrating yoga as a supportive therapy can optimize pre-pregnancy metabolic parameters among women with PCOS. There were also interesting results in this particular group with regards to pregnancy within 1-year of the study's initiation.
Yoga to Support Preconception Lifestyle
Comprehensive yoga supports your entire life, from the physical to the spiritual, and helps us recognize where we may be getting in the way of our self-care and relationship with others. Looking inward, you may want to adjust relationships with food, create a movement plan that supports your changing needs, open your mind towards messages sent from your body, or let go of attachments or aversions that no longer support you. Around you there may be a lack of social support or connection to something bigger (nature, source, spirit...) that can remind us of our relative place in this world, and help us feel less alone in our struggles. Comprehensive yoga meets you where you are and fosters self-inquiry, support and motivation to move along the path of your choice.
