Menopausal Transitions
Menopausal transitions are natural and expected mind-body experiences that affect all levels of a person's being- emotions, sensations, thoughts, physical health and behavior. Some people experience years of symptoms moving through perimenopause while others transition more abruptly. Yoga offers effective techniques to support your brain, body, emotions and spirit before, during and after transition, and can help offset the cascading pattern of compounding symptoms.
Modern science now recognizes that menopause changes the brain.
We have misunderstood and been misinformed about the workings of our bodies for a long, long time. The latest research on menopause and the natural changes proceeding it indicate that common symptoms (hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety, depression and brain fog, to name just a few) are caused by significant changes in the brain- chemically, physically and energetically. Most women who sought care for discomfort were misdiagnosed and prescribed medicines to help alleviate symptoms without understanding the root cause, and without feeling empowered to embrace lifestyle changes to support their evolving body, spirit, mind and brain.
Women spend around 40% of their lives in menopause.
Medically, during this time significant hormonal changes are affecting the vitality of every organ. Through a yogic lens, rajas and tamas (activity and inactivity) are in flux as your body is trying to find a new balanced state (sattva). Moving towards wise-womanhood also brings an increase in vata energy as some of our inner fire subsides, the body begins to dry, forgetfulness may increase, our sensitivities can increase, staying asleep may be a challenge. Yoga aims to balance the forces within us by bolstering deficiencies so we may connect with our grace, intuition and creativity again.

Menopausal Transitions May Begin in Young Adulthood
As we begin noticing changes in our body and lifestyle, it's not always obvious that the progression towards menopause may be a root cause. In other instances, like medically-induced menopause or procedures that may alter our hormonal balance, we can plan for abrupt changes and choose a proactive approach to our care. Some situations that can bring earlier menopausal transitions are:
-
Premature or early menopause may occur in females bodies for a variety of reasons including premature ovarian insufficiency (POI)
-
Oophorectomy (surgical removal of the ovaries)
-
Partial/"Simple" or complete hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus)
-
Certain cancer therapies, including chemotherapy or radiation therapy
